This little animal from the weasel family has become a symbol of Siberia, a huge and seemingly boundless area in the north of Asia. Dark and dense taiga forests with thick undergrowth and plentiful deadwood provide ideal conditions for the sable.

The sable is a characteristic dweller of Siberian taiga forests. This skillful predator is very strong, considering its tiny size. It is a terrestrial animal, usually inhabiting the areas close to mountain river sources, rich in thickets and rock deposits.

It moves around by jumping, each jump being 30-70 cm. Sables are terrific tree climbers with extremely well-developed senses of hearing and smell. They also move on fresh snow easily.

Sables mostly feed on mouse-like rodents. They often prey on squirrels, chipmunks and hares. Grouses and wood grouses are often attacked by sables, although birds are generally a secondary meal choice. The sable also feeds on plants, with preference given to pine nuts, rowanberries and blueberries.

The sable’s fur, lightweight, warm and extremely hardwearing, is the main reason for sable hunting. During the Soviet times there were periods when the number of sables on this whole territory was critically low. During those periods this remarkable animal was in very real danger of total extinction.

The measures taken to increase the population of sables were partially successful and its numbers grew slowly. After the state monopoly for hunting sables in Russia was abolished, its hunting has mostly been managed by private companies. The state attempts to regulate sable hunting by giving out quotas and permits, but these measures are insufficiently effective. The numbers at fur auctions speak volumes and prove that the scale of sable hunting is overwhelmingly larger than allowed by official permits.

Putorana plateau is a rugged mountain range located in the north-western part of the Middle Siberian highlands. The plateau area is 250 thousand square kilometers, roughly the area of the UK.

Putorana state nature reserve occupies a part of the plateau. It has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

The Putorana, also known as the Putorana Plateau, is one of the most uninhabited places on the planet. Seeing these majestic natural places with your own eyes is only possible from a helicopter.

Putorana state natural reserve was created in 1988 in order to preserve this pristine natural environment.

The video was shot by Vasiliy Sarana, a well-known wildlife cameraman and staff member of Putorana reserve. Vasiliy lives and works near ‘Severny Ayan’ boundary of Putorana reserve.

Соболь - характерный обитатель сибирской тайги. Ловкий и очень сильный для своих размеров хищник. Ведёт наземный образ жизни. Как правило, обитает в верховьях горных рек, в зарослях, среди каменных россыпей.

Легкий теплый и очень ноский мех – является главной причиной истребления соболя. В советское время были периоды, когда численность соболя на территории всего его ареала падала до критической. Фактически этот замечательный зверек мог исчезнуть насовсем.

Предпринимаемые меры по восстановлению численности соболя имели частичный успех, численность возрастала. После снятия гос.монополии в России на добычу соболя практически вся его добыча сконцентрирована в частных руках. Государство пытается выдачей квот и лицензий регулировать добычу, но это имеет слабые результаты. Цифры меховых аукционов красноречиво говорят – соболя добывается в разы больше чем выдается лицензий.

Плато Путорана - сильно расчленённый горный массив, расположенный на северо-западе Среднесибирского плоскогорья. Площадь плато составляет 250 тыс. км².

На части плато расположен Путоранский государственный природный заповедник, признанный ЮНЕСКО памятником Всемирного наследия.

Путорана или Плато Путорана – одно из самых безлюдных и малонаселенных мест на планете. Увидеть воочию эти величественные места можно только при помощи вертолета.

Для охраны девственной природы плато Путорана в 1988 году создан Путоранский государственный природный заповедник.
